NUMBERING OF COACHES
The
coaching stock of the G.W.R., S.R. and L.M.S. were numbered in broad batches,
irrespective of age or origin.
L.M.S. COACH
NUMBERING (after 1932/3)
The numbering was as follows:
1-299 Dining cars, etc.
300-799 Sleeping cars
800-999 Special saloons
L.M.S. GENERAL VESTIBULE CARRIAGES (1000-9999)
The characteristics
of the periods as described by Essery and Jenkinson (1977) and annotated in the
first column were as follows:
(I): from 1923, high
waisted, wood-panelled
(II): from 1929, low
waisted, with square windows, wood or steel-panelled
(III): from 1933,
flush-clad steel, with rounded window corners
Other
notes:
1-w/2-w:
one/two windows per compartment
3-d/4-d:
three/four passenger doors on corridor side
all door:
(on compartment side)
flush:
non-panelled in contrast to previous examples
porthole:
circular toilet windows
compts:
composite stock compartments are shown as first/third class
s: saloon
(plus compartments in semi-open stock)
Shallow/deep
vents refers to sliding window elements (the latter standard for later Period
III stock).
The letters
in the sixth column indicate diagrams with similar internal layout, although
seating, etc, may vary.
The references
to the toilet positions in the seventh column are:
TC:
centrally placed in coach, TB: at brake end only, TA: at other end of brake
coach,
TP: paired
at one end of the FO or TO coach
Otherwise
the toilets were placed at both ends of the passenger accommodation.
This list
excludes articulated stock which were numbered separately.
NB When the allocations for corridor and vestibule
stock were filled additional batches occupied series: 12750-13184 and
24500--27956

L.N.E.R. COACH
NUMBERING
In 1923 the numbers of absorbed passenger stock were initially suffixed
with letters.
LNER standard designs were numbered in a separate series from 10000.
Then, in 1925, the numbers were prefixed with numbers instead. The
respective suffixes and prefixes were as follows:
East Coast Joint stock: J, 1
N.E.R.: Y, 2
N.B.R.: B, 3
G.N.: N, 4
G.C.: C, 5
G.E.R.: E, 6
G.N.S.R.: S, 7
The intention was to allocate numbers to new stock according to line usage and
this was largely fulfilled. The M. & G.N. stock taken over in 1936 were placed
in a new 8XXXX series.
In 1943 the stock was extensively renumbered according to type in new
numerical ranges. Within each range numbers were applied in the order of
areas:
North Eastern, Southern Scottish, Great Northern, Great Central, Great Eastern
and Northern Scottish. The 10000 series was dispensed with.
However, some East Coast vehicles retained their existing numbers, while new
vehicles were numbered in the series: 100-157, 1000-1998 with no particular
internal order. The other major exception was that G.E. short vestibule
carriages retained their numbers in the 6XXXX series.
As an example of the renumbering, 10019J (of 1924) became 1000 (from 1925),
was later transferred to general stock as 4462, then became 12039 from 1943. Such
final numbers received an ‘E’ prefix in 1948 and then an (additional) suffix
‘E’ from 1951.
The new ranges for general
stock and most catering vehicles were as follows:

Throughout the period
under consideration, new mainline East Coast stock were built and their older
counterparts were displaced and ‘cascaded’ into general service and renumbered
accordingly. The following tables provide a guide to the general service
corridor stock as renumbered in 1943 and subsequently.
