MAJOR GOODS YARDS
The following section lists marshalling yards and city goods yards, based on information currently available to the compiler. These locations were, in part at least, ‘traffic hubs’ dealing with the marshalling and redistribution of freight. Such places varied in importance with time, particularly in the case of those that served extractive industries such as coal concentration centres. Dockyard railheads are omitted as are yards that operated purely as goods stations, with the exception of those termini in London.
The yards are listed according to their location on pre-grouping lines except where published information indicates a later date of building. Those yards built or rebuilt by British Railways including those following the B.R. modernisation scheme are shown in bold. ‘H’ indicates a hump (gravitational) yard.
Published railway histories tend to lack detail on freight working and the compiler would welcome information on important omissions from this listing.
