GWR STANDARD GAUGE LIST 1854-1913

Listed in chronological order where possible

No 181 'Ivanhoe', later converted to 4-6-0 number 2981

The earliest G.W.R. locomotives were of broad gauge. The first was delivered in 1837 and it was not until 1854, when the Shrewsbury and Chester and the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Companies were taken over, that standard gauge engines were needed. Swindon built the first in 1855.

In 1869 the first large-scale conversion to standard gauge occurred. However, the company continued to absorb companies west of Bristol that were of broad gauge and it was not until 1892 that broad gauge was finally abolished. In this interim period, ‘convertible’ locomotives were constructed; essentially standard gauge engines with broad gauge axles and wheels outside the frames.

A large number of G.W.R. locomotives were renumbered at the end of 1912 in preparation for a more ordered system where, if practicable, the second of the four figures of an engine’s number related to a particular wheel arrangement.

In this list: abs. = date of absorption of stock; d-f = double-framed; rebt = major rebuild/’renewal’; other dates, generally at the end of each entry, refer to date of initial build/maximum longevity of the whole class/group unless stated otherwise. ‘Renewals’ in many cases were essentially new builds incorporating little of the original locomotives.

'Original' relates to locomotives as first built and numbered whose numbers were later taken by locomotives of the same class. G.W.R. class numbers and types refer mainly to the final, generally rebuilt forms.

Saddle tank/pannier tank (ST/PT) variations are not necessarily related to the given time frame: ‘PT from date’ indicates the initiation of conversions from saddle to pannier tank. (In time, some 2021 class locomotives reverted to saddle tanks.) It should be noted that some such as 1076 and 1813 classes originated as side tank (T) locomotives. BWT refers to an engine with back and well tanks.

This list, based on RCTS publications, is not fully validated.

Note: ‘1076’ Class locomotives 728, 1167, 1660 were transferred to the R. & S.B.R. in 1915 (no728)/1919, as was ‘2721’ Class 2756 in 1921.

Those locomotives shown as sold or transferred in the list generally reverted to their old numbers at the grouping.
