LOCOMOTIVES OF THE L.M.S., NUMERICAL LIST

This list details the L.M.S. locomotives in service between 1923 and 1970. Pregrouping locomotives are here listed in summary form: for further details see L.M.S. detail file. The format for L.M.S.-built locos is as follows:

number-builder-wheel arrangement-type; maximum length of service of the whole class; other notes

Locomotives numbered below 10000 which were subject to renumbering in, or did not survive until 1934 are asterisked; in the former case § indicates that 20000 was added to the numbers of the survivors.

In the lists of absorbed classes (L.M.S, detail file), the type precedes the numerical details and pregrouping numbers (G) precede the dates of service. (M.R. locomotive numbers were not changed). It should not be assumed that the pregrouping numbers ran sequentially as shown: this is particularly true for the L.N.W.R. examples (e.g. 193--2194).
