The left-hand column of the summary table shows the original pre-grouping stock at 1923. The right-hand column and other italicised text show Southern Railway stock, S&DJ vehicles absorbed in 1930 and renumbered, modified, older stock. The renumbering of the Isle of Wight (IOW) stock in a separate series was not started until 1926.

Some numerical batches of pre-group stock include more than one diagram.

Numbers in brackets indicate the number of compartments/bays.

Diagram (D) numbers are given for Southern Railway new builds.

The term ‘ciphered’ means written off in value but retained for occasional use.

References to 58ft stock relate to rebuilt 48ft carriages on new longer underframes.

Composite coaches are shown where appropriate with classes as (F, S, or T) as originally applied. Most second class compartments were downgraded to third class on boat trains in 1934/5 after the introduction of nondescript stock from 1931; other stock was downgraded in Sept 1923.

Descriptions of Maunsell stock are: ‘Thanet’: 1924-5; (H), (L): ‘high-‘ / ‘low-window stock’; (1935/6): later series by year. Low and high window stock shared some diagram numbers.

All Bulleid vehicles (1945-51) were restriction 4.

‘Trailer’ refers to a push-pull (p-p) train component, excepting AC and DC electric stock.
